{"id":27118,"date":"2021-04-23T12:21:18","date_gmt":"2021-04-23T12:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/?p=27118"},"modified":"2022-12-24T10:20:01","modified_gmt":"2022-12-24T10:20:01","slug":"opening-medical-practice-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/opening-medical-practice-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"A Real Story of How to Open Medical Practice in Canada + List of Software Required"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It was the usual day for us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developers were coding a telemedicine app.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designers were designing the UI of medical billing software.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Network engineers were drafting the IT floor plan for a hospital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compliance experts were preparing PIA documents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I was having calls with clients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After having the evening coffee, I prepared myself for the next virtual meeting with Dr. Martin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has been working as a physician and approached us to now open medical practice in Ontario.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the scheduled time, we both were on the call.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following was our conversation. (I am sharing it here after he permits!)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Martin:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">I want to start my own private medical practice. But as I figured out there are many challenges. So, I need your help!&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is indeed an exciting journey to open a medical practice in Canada. But it is challenging too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because there are many challenges which you have to solve in order to successfully start a medical clinic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, compliance is a major challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up network infrastructure is also challenging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also need to deploy several computer devices along with medical equipment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there are other billing, accounting and legal challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, a physician like you does not have time to solve all these challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we are here. Please educate me on it!&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason it is a major challenge is that it is a law and you have to adhere to the law at any cost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply put, when a clinic handles patient data on either software\/app\/server\/website or on paper, that clinic must adhere to our country\u2019s data privacy laws.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about Ontario, there is PHIPA which is healthcare-specific law and PIPEDA which is a federal-level law &#8211; that applies to medical clinics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These laws include several operational and technical requirements which ensure the privacy of patients&#8217; medical and personal data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the PHIPA regulations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Healthcare providers can only collect, use and disclose the patient\u2019s data if the individual permits.<\/li><li>Healthcare providers cannot collect, use and disclose the information if other information serves the purpose.<\/li><li>Healthcare providers must not collect, use and disclose the information more than needed.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the full list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/phipa-ontario-regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><u><strong>PHIPA regulations<\/strong><\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These regulations do not only apply to clinics. It also applies to the software or app clinics are using to deliver care or to manage the clinic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if you are using billing software, it must be compliant with these laws.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you build your own telemedicine platform, it must work according to the law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If any digital medium you are using is not compliant with data privacy laws, you become a non-compliant entity and become liable for the fine by the government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, there must not be any privacy vulnerabilities in your all clinical operations and digital solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find privacy vulnerabilities within your clinic, we execute PIA (privacy impact assessment).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And once we know the privacy vulnerabilities, we solve them. Now, what about a network?
