{"id":27566,"date":"2021-07-08T11:31:58","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T11:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/?p=27566"},"modified":"2021-09-15T11:53:55","modified_gmt":"2021-09-15T11:53:55","slug":"hospital-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/hospital-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Hospital at Home and Which Technologies it Requires?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The other day, I was searching for good TED Talks videos.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After scrolling the YouTube window for several minutes, a TED Talks video titled \u2018<strong>Why the future of hospital will be your own home | Neils van Namen<\/strong>\u2019 grabbed my attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I started watching it and very soon <strong>got excited <\/strong>as I finally found someone who is fascinated by the idea of the hospital at home!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Neils van Namen &#8211; who has been in healthcare for over 20 years &#8211; stated in his TED Talks video that almost 64% of patients are avoiding care due to cost. And even when they do get treatment, hospitals often make them sicker.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further said his mom who was 82 years old (in 2018 when he spoke in TED Talks), was avoiding going to the hospital because she finds it difficult to <strong>plan and manage<\/strong> the journey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">That\u2019s not just about his mom, many elderly people are avoiding care or keep delaying it for so long that a small healthcare complication becomes a life-threatening disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many times, patients leave the hospital more disabled than when they came in.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">While convenience is what patients fail to find in a hospital, their major concerns are <strong>unnecessary healthcare costs and stays<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s the practical solution?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Well, what about bringing a hospital at home?!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"642\" height=\"361\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zamvnyBB-SU\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our other useful resources:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/accuro-integration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Accuro EMR integration<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/telemedicine-software-for-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White-label telemedicine software for providers<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/telemedicine-for-pregnancy-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Telemedicine for pregnancy care<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syscreations.ca\/blog\/build-app-for-caregivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Build app for caregiver<\/a> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1><strong>What is hospital at home (HaH)?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Hospital at home is an <strong>advanced care delivery model<\/strong> in which healthcare providers set up cutting-edge hospital tech and devices at patients\u2019 homes and provide medical services by visiting patients at their homes and virtually through telemedicine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">One of the major goals of the hospital at home care delivery model is to let patients receive care while being surrounded by their loved ones and in a comfortable home environment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Particularly, two large patient groups &#8211; <strong>seniors and kids<\/strong> &#8211; can benefit most from the HaH care delivery model as they find it more difficult to be comfortable with an intense hospital environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">HaH is considered one of the safest and effective care delivery models due to more patient-focused personalized care, a lower rate of hospital-based issues such as infection and lower possibilities of virus transmission as care is provided by the same team in an isolated environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>British Columbia has invested $42 million into the hospital at home project&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2020, B.C. rolled out a pilot project of the hospital at home by partnering with <strong>Victoria General Hospital<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pilot project is designed to treat some of the patients at their homes &#8211; rather than hospitals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The major goal of the HaH project is to reduce the burden healthcare facilities have been facing due to the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, under the HaH pilot project, <strong>majorly elderly people<\/strong> are receiving medical services at their homes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they are planning to expand it more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#7b68ee\" class=\"has-inline-color\">According to&nbsp; Dr. Elisabeth Crisci, who is leading the project, \u201cIt is an opportunity to offer safer, more patient-centred care for our patients and for less cost. It is the right thing to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Top hospital at home service providers in Canada<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HaH care delivery model has been very popular and successful in the UK and Australia. And now, it is getting popular in Canada as well. <strong>&nbsp;(Otherwise, the BC government would never have invested $42 million into it!)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are top healthcare centers providing hospital at home services in Canada.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><span style=\"color:#dd0055\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Victoria General Hospital or Royal Jubilee Hospital<\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They started HaH services in fall 2020. Their healthcare team which includes physicians, nurses, allied health and pharmacists look after patients both in-person and through virtual care methods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it requires referral to receive healthcare services at home as it is not suitable for every patient.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><span style=\"color:#dd0055\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Northern Health<\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Northern Health provides a short-term HaH program &#8211; generally for 3-7 days.
