Prince Edward Island faces a shortage of healthcare professionals as they prefer to work in some tier 1 Canadian cities rather than a small island. As an upshot, residents of Prince Edward Island are not able to get timely access to healthcare services and thus, they travel to their nearest province New Brunswick for healthcare. This increases the wait time in the healthcare facilities of New Brunswick. Using a telemedicine app, doctors who are situated outside of Prince Edward Island can also treat residents of PEI and enable them to get quick access to healthcare services from the comfort of their homes.

The government-funded PEI HealthCard is available in Prince Edward Island. Unlike Ontario and B.C., it does not cover televisits. However, it is anticipated that the government will soon bring televisits under it. (Our telemedicine solution can easily be customized to support PEI HealthCard-covered televisits.)

If you are a public entity such as a hospital, FOIPP does apply to you. And if you are a healthcare organization - even the private one - HIA does apply to you. HIA is a major law dedicatedly imposed to govern the data in the healthcare industry.

The operating cost includes app maintenance, APIs fees, customer service, ongoing marketing and staffing cost.

That’s the major drawback of HIA. It only asks entities to safeguard PHI but does not suggest the ways to safeguard PHI.  Thus, it is up to you if you want to encrypt the PHI. But you must secure the PHI of patients anyhow and there is no better way than encryption.

HIA does not ask you to have a signed contract between you and IT service providers.
